Pervy Dutch director Paul Verhoeven is better known for Basic Instinct and Showgirls, but war movies are his true métier. In this deliciously plotted WWII survival tale (a comeback of sorts for the Hollywood exile), a hotcha Jewish singer becomes a spy, a freedom fighter and a bed partner of Nazis. Talented Carice van Houten commits fully.

When Buddhism entered Tibet, it did not attempt to suppress belief in theindigenous forces. Rather, it incorporated them into its worldview, makingthem protectors of the dharma who were converted by tantric adepts likePadmasambhava, and who now watch over Buddhism and fight against its enemies. An example is Tangla, a god associated with the Tangla mountains, who wasconvinced to become a Buddhist by Padmasambhava and now is thought to guard hisarea against forces inimical to the dharma. The most powerful deities areoften considered to be manifestations of buddhas, bodhisattvas, Oikinis, etc.,but the mundane forces are thought to be merely worldly powers, who havedemonic natures that have been suppressed by Buddhism. Although theirconversion has ameliorated the worst of their fierceness, they are still demonswho must be kept in check by shamanistic rituals and the efforts of Buddhistadepts. Nor should it be thought that Buddhist practitioners are free from theinfluences of the folk religion. These beliefs and practices are prevalent inall levels of Tibetan society, and it is common to see learned scholar-lamas,masters of empirically-based dialectics and thoroughly practical in dailyaffairs, refuse to travel at certain times in order to avoid dangerous spiritsor decide their travel schedules after first performingl divination todetermine the most auspicious time. Such attitudes may be dismissed as"irrational" by Westerners, but for Tibetans they are entirely pragmaticresponses to a world populated by forces that are potentially harmful.
The movie begins with shots of worn trailers and heaps of junk and debris. Our first impression of Bathtub is one of poverty. Very quickly, our narrator introduces us to the Bathtub community. Truthfully, Bathtub is a humble community that is just cut off from the rest of the world by a levee. They are very connected to the earth and enjoy life their own way different from those in the city. They view their life as quite free and self-sufficient since they raise their own animals and catch their own seafood. Another noticeable aspect of the community is their strong conviction against the city (although this could be alternatively interpreted instead as a strong attachment to their home). Wink himself seems to look down upon city life (which is ironic because the city folk can literally look down on them from their tall buildings). Even when their homes are destroyed, they still look forward to rebuilding their community. Consequently, the spirit of the Bathtubbians also manifests itself in Hushpuppy.
